I’m Going to Prison

double_comboNot to worry. It was self-defense. I am accused of killing a double cheeseburger, a side of fries and a large drink. I did it without the slightest bit of remorse.

To be honest, the combo had it coming. I was terribly hungry and it just sat there taunting me with its smoky grilled smell. The ice shifted in the cup and I took it as an act of aggression. The next thing that happened was an altercation that left nothing but dirty napkins and stains. Yet, I am not ashamed.

Actually, today I got the chance to go to the penitentiary. This prison houses adult males and females and youth boys (13-18). Christie has been going with a team for a few months to visit the youth section of the prison.

Last Friday I had the chance to go and be tech support for sound and audio. That means I brought and hooked up a DVD player to a 14-inch TV in the yard so we could show a movie. We brought our own popcorn and drinks and put on a theater. This was a small present for the Christmas season to the guys there.

Today we ventured out into the downpour to join a pastor in the adult male side of the prison. He had a church service planned and we helped provide a special Christmas meal. I had the pleasure of passing out plates of grilled beef and chicken with sides. For us, these tag-alongs have blossomed into an open door to start another ministry serving the young fellows.

Starting in early 2013 we will be partnering with a couple of Brazilian ladies to begin our new effort for incarcerated youth. There is going to be a sports component, music class, Bible study, and time to teach those interested how to read. Each of these aspects will be a chance to pour into the lives of these young men.

We’re grateful for the opportunity for positive interaction and relationship-building with these youth. Join with us as we pray for this project. Pray that God will use us to show these guys His Hope.

Have you ever done prison visitation or ministry? Have you ever killed a number 6, super-sized with extra pickle?

    1. I am guessing you are answering the first question.
;-)> We have been doing some online training with Prison Fellowship (I think). The system here is wildly different and so we have had to modify our application of the concepts to fit.

      1. For me it was surreal talking with violent rapists and killers who had been transformed by Christ, and in many ways had more passion than people in most churches I had been in.

      2. Luke 7:42-43 …Now which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”

“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
